Why Does Opportunity Knock?
Last week while diligently working at my desk opportunity knocked. It was a booking agent for a national cable TV show and they needed a financial expert to fill in for a spot later that day. “Could you get to our studios in D.C. by 1:30 to do a 5 minute live spot?” Are you kidding me.
What new author/blogger wouldn’t like that knock at the door? National exposure.
But what made opportunity choose to knock at my door? Was it fate. Did the opportunity gods suddenly decide it must be my turn for a visit and I was just plain lucky?
Over the last six months I have mailed out over 3,000 copies of my book to media reps. There was the National Marketing Seminar in New York last March where I met 100 booking agents who each got a marketing package and copy of my latest book, Hermanisms: Axioms for Business & Life. Maybe hiring that PR firm down in Texas that sent out hundreds of requests for spots on radio, interviews in the press, reviews for my book, or any other form of exposure helped. Could it have been the follow-up emails and thank you notes to everyone I have met in the media hoping they would call. Maybe it was the 50+ radio interviews. Or was it just dumb luck that good old opportunity found me that day?
Things don’t just happen. You have to set opportunity in motion for it to find you. It has to be swirling all around you in a variety of ways to find your door. Maybe spending that 2 hours a day on solid, sometimes boring, always mundane, simple marketing efforts worked. Ya Think!
Yes, there is sometimes dumb luck and opportunity finds you. I think you better stick to the everyday, everyway effort to help it find you.
Oh yeah. They liked me on the show and I will be on again on October 8th.
What luck, huh.
