Where do you focus your efforts?

With little enough time in any day the road to success depends a great deal on where you focus your efforts.

One of the common threads of failure is the lack of focus on the little things. In one of my companies, Equity Partners, Inc. our much discussed motto was “fanatical attention to detail.” We didn’t just worry about a letter going out to prospects who might want to buy a company we represented, we paid fanatical attention to what was said in the letter, what the layout was, and if possible even when it was mailed (mail arriving Tuesday is best because it is the slowest mail day).

Someone has to make sure all of the little details are getting accomplished. That meant I spent nights up late printing, stuffing, stamping and labeling until we could hire staff to perform the functions needed. Many people want to concentrate on doing the things they like, instead of the things that need to be done.

What did you do today that really could have waited while you should have done the little things to make sure your project is heading in the right direction?

Welcome

After 30+ years in business, I’ve decided that it’s time to share my hard knocks knowledge. Having worked in almost 200 bankruptcy cases and many other kinds of business failure situations, I have awarded myself a Ph.D. from what I refer to as the Herman School of Business. In this blog, you’ll read about starting a business, running a business, and, if the situation calls for it, selling a business; about being a business success and not a business failure. Welcome …
