What they don't teach in school...

One constant question that students ask is “What can you tell me that I need to know but they don’t teach in school?” My first answer is to tell them to read both my books and this blog which I refer to as the Herman School of Business!

But specifically there are some things worth repeating. One thing they never teach you enough about is how hard it is to make money and be successful. They make it seem like if you complete a check-list you end up with money or success. Wrong. Next is the fact that those you count on to help, or your customers or vendors, DO NOT share your passion nor always have your integrity which often trips people up because they expect everyone to be just like them.

School tells you to be aware that you don’t know everything but they don’t emphasize enough that older people you look up to or expect to understand a situation better than you do don’t always know what they are doing. Young people entering the business world have an opinion and should not be afraid to believe in it or voice it.

When you graduate…or even if you are fifty years old…never stop reading. I read two books at the same time all the time. One is for escape and the other is for specific knowledge about a subject I may be interested in learning more about. Often the book for escape also teaches me new ideas. And don’t just rely on the Internet for information. Pick up newspapers and magazines and watch more than just Comedy Central for your news. I can’t tell you how many young people have never picked up a newspaper. While they may be a fading institution…they are still here now with lots of good stuff.

And another point before we close today…everyone has the same 24 hours in a day…stop thinking those ahead of you are just lucky…they probably also work harder than most others. Are you out-working those you are chasing?

Welcome

After 30+ years in business, I’ve decided that it’s time to share my hard knocks knowledge. Having worked in almost 200 bankruptcy cases and many other kinds of business failure situations, I have awarded myself a Ph.D. from what I refer to as the Herman School of Business. In this blog, you’ll read about starting a business, running a business, and, if the situation calls for it, selling a business; about being a business success and not a business failure. Welcome …
