Tis the Season

Alright blog readers…the calendar rolls on and tells us all this year is shot. It’s over for good or for bad. Somehow, someway we are “starting over” again in about a week. Of course we really aren’t starting over…but the year will change and we like keeping time in chunks as if one chunk is more important than another.

“Have a nice Day” or “what a great day it’s your birthday”…weeks and months are chunks of time but we don’t give them special phrases. But New Years…ah…we actually throw parties for New Years. It is clearly marked as an end and a new beginning. And since most people aren’t always winning, I bet it means more of a new beginning and a chance for better days.

Look, I didn’t invent the calendar, but like you I have to live by it. So, if this week ends a year, then let’s take stock of what it meant. There were those sixteen days of heaven spent in Austria seeing unbelievable sights. And how about the profits we made selling the Abacrombie back in May. My daughter Shannon graduated with honors and a Master’s degree and joined the full time work force. Another daughter, Colleen, living in New York switched jobs as a designer in New York for a company you all recognize, Calvin Klein. Joolz had a fabulous wedding in Las Vegas where I got to ride into the Chapel in a 1959 Pink Cadillac driven by Elvis who conducted the ceremony. Sonny got that gig at the five star hotel we visited in Austria. And Kelly is doing a wonderful job with two of our grandsons and teaching special needs kids. Wow, a great year.

The business stuff can be put aside for the next few days. We can take stock of that perhaps next weekend. For today pay attention to Hermanism # 70….THERE IS NEVER ENOUGH TIME TO LAUGH WITH YOUR KIDS.

So….think about the wonderful things that happened for you and your family this year…only the good stuff…and go call them or see them and laugh out loud with them. This is not the time for any more work for a few days. Merry Christmas to all of you. Thanks for reading the posts and the wonderful support. The next few days I am going to enjoy my family and I hope you do the same.

Welcome

After 30+ years in business, I’ve decided that it’s time to share my hard knocks knowledge. Having worked in almost 200 bankruptcy cases and many other kinds of business failure situations, I have awarded myself a Ph.D. from what I refer to as the Herman School of Business. In this blog, you’ll read about starting a business, running a business, and, if the situation calls for it, selling a business; about being a business success and not a business failure. Welcome …
