Herman School of Business
Those in the midst of the struggle.
When you think about someone at the top, those who have accomplished their goals, we often say they have lost touch. They are not in the same real world as those in the midst of the struggle. Does the President know the price of milk or bread? Does any hedge fund manager?
Now, I am not talking here about most of you. I am speaking here to those in the early days of the climb. When the hill is the highest in front of you. The best film ever made to portray what I am talking about is The Pursuit of Happyness where Will Smith brilliantly recounts the early struggle of Chris Gardner, a homeless man turned stock broker who overcame all to make it to the top. If you haven’t seen this movie go get it immediately and watch it. It is indeed a great story of overcoming all obstacles to become a success. It is the story of many who struggle in the midst of the pursuit of success.
The dark days seem endless when you begin. But then, they get worse. Bills go unpaid as money just isn’t there for everything at once. You start to doubt yourself a bit, but go on. Others around you doubt you even more. What’s wrong with you? Why don’t you give up that silly dream and get a real job. For there are real bills to pay. Can’t you see that? But inside your head the little voice says “push on” because success is just around the next bend. I never understood why the others couldn’t see it.
Other postings will give you my view of when to quit and move on to something else. This posting is just to let you know the struggle is normal, for as you know, if it was easy, everyone would be doing it.
HERMANISM # 7
You Go Until You Hit A Wall. Then You Climb Over It, Dig Under It, Or Go Around It. When All These Efforts Leave You Still Behind The Wall, Walk Away And Do Something Else.
