Herman School of Business
There is a Bright Future
Peering into the faces of more than 100 students last week at the University of Wisconsin was an incredible experience. People like Giotto, Henry, Katelyn and many more members of the College Entrepreneurs Organization and the American Marketing Association have given me faith that the future of American business is in good hands.
They entered the room with confidence and enthusiasm for where they are in their studies, and where they are headed in their careers. These students were polite, conducted their meeting with a professional air, and listened intently as my speech hit on points for them to ponder about what comes next after they complete their education. A dozen or so of the kids took me to a local restaurant after the talk to share more time together. More stories were swapped. Not just mine about memories from the past, but their stories about businesses they were starting, or had run, or would soon be engaged in as they pooled some money to launch a real estate venture.
The next day I visited Salisbury University and met a very upbeat classroom of students who were in the Financial Management Association. Attentive, well rounded focused individuals who took in what I had to say and gave feedback indicative of their desire to learn. A third presentation at CCBC in Baltimore completed my mini triple college tour for the week and confirmed what I had observed at the first two schools.
College campuses are brimming with bright energetic people working hard to obtain their sheepskin and take their place in the business world. You hear so much about young people not wanting to work or partying their way through school, or not paying attention to what older folks have to say…I can tell you this…many have emailed me a thank you for just my showing up and taking the time to share with them. Others have emailed me asking for advice with pointed questions about personal and business issues.
These students are inspiring and some have joined our group to begin reading this blog. Let me commend them for being here and for sending me notes on their efforts and goals. If I can’t answer a specific need, someone among the reading audience will supply the right response.
My hearty welcome to these students…thanks for being here….please comment from time to time as you wish. Challenge what you read and make me think along with you. I hope to return to each college next year and see first hand the progress being made by the kids as they seek to achieve certain goals. It’s great to have some new younger friends join the Herman School of Business, and I hope they share this site with others at colleges around the country.
