Please Let Them Fail....

The head of the auto unions says they can do no more cutting…his members have given back enough…what Planet does he live on? If your kid ran up a credit card bill big enough to choke a horse (and your name was on that debt) never in a million years would your kid drive home in his new sports car and ask you to bail him or her out. Yet all three auto executives flew into Washington on a private jet and begged for help.

They say the auto companies might not buy Super Bowl advertising this year. And somehow they want credit for that as good judgment…hey, I am not advertising HERMANISMS on the Super Bowl this year either. You see I could do the Math and know it wouldn’t be cost effective. Will someone please pat me on the back?

The days of “Entitlement” are over. Let’s not buy products from publicly traded companies that allow waste on airplanes, sky boxes at sports events, luxury suites at hotels with spas that would make you say ahhhhh. Enough already.

Union workers will lose their jobs because their leadership negotiated contracts that could never work in a million years. This is like having a rich old tenant staying in your property and they let you keep raising the rent way beyond market rates because they don’t want to leave and still have some money in the bank…the math catches up…your tenant goes broke…and since you borrowed money on the property based on the ridiculous rent…you lose the property because you owe more than it’s worth.

Has one auto exec lost their job? Has one member of the Board of Directors been fired? Has one union exec lost his job? Where in this country has one person in charge been held responsible for their actions? Only those on the bottom tiers have been forced out…because the top level needs your paycheck to keep those hot stone massages from going away. The stress level of watching thousands lose their homes means the head of Countrywide must spend eternity on the beach or in a tanning booth while he contemplates how he can get out with a great severance package.

Has Barney Frank fired himself? Are the elected officials on TV for real? Let’s put money aside favoring minorities over others who are also in trouble…is that Congresswoman from California nuts? We are drowning here people because we don’t ever want to share blame. Protecting one group over another is what the executives have been guilty of for years…they have protected themselves at our expense. I don’t ever want to hear protection for minorities, women, handicapped, aged, or anything else again. How about we simply do what is right FOR EVERYBODY. No more protectionism and no more favoritism.

Let’s level the playing field again. Let those going under crash and burn. Good-bye. They can start over like the millions before them in business who have failed (Myself Included!). The lesson learned from facing the reality of losing will make them better able to become successful again…with no advantage over any other group

Welcome

After 30+ years in business, I’ve decided that it’s time to share my hard knocks knowledge. Having worked in almost 200 bankruptcy cases and many other kinds of business failure situations, I have awarded myself a Ph.D. from what I refer to as the Herman School of Business. In this blog, you’ll read about starting a business, running a business, and, if the situation calls for it, selling a business; about being a business success and not a business failure. Welcome …
