LOVE is all you need...

Welcome to the 100th posting of the Herman School of Business. And thank you to every reader and every person who has written a comment, asked a question, or sent me a note that they are getting something out of my messages. Is it a coincidence that this posting comes on the one day of the year we openly celebrate love…or is the higher power shining down on me and making my 100th posting fall on a day that coincides with my belief?

If you could teach your children just one life skill which one would you choose? Would you want them to be the best athlete in your favorite sport? Or maybe you would want a brilliant scientist who could solve a world problem. How about raising the greatest entertainer in American history? Perhaps you want a child who is a singing star, with Oscar winning acting skills, who mesmerizes an audience. Please don’t tell me you want your child’s life skill to be making money. Do you want a child with a Warren Buffet mind, or Trump’s deal skills, but without the swoopy hair? Forget it…none of these things are anywhere near the top of my list.

Teach your kid to love.

Be a role model by doing the things a parent does to show their love. Provide for them yes, but make them see that you know what matters in the world. Teach them that we should love one another, above all else. And teach them that love is really all they need to find happiness.

Think I am being preachy? Hey, this blogger promised to always “let it all out” when I hit the keyboard to deliver my message. And I know teaching my kids to love beats anything else I could ever give them as a parent. Look at your life and see what you could live without. That fancy car disappears, so what. You lose the six bedroom house as your business fails, as I once did, so what. Lose the love of someone you love and the pain just never goes away.

They say with age comes wisdom. Well then you should listen to this old geezer because I feel so old I must be a freaking genius. Just pulling your chain, my workouts continue and I am actually getting younger every day. But the truth is so simple. I don’t know anyone who wouldn’t give away every dime in the bank and all the stuff they have accumulated, rather than give up someone they truly love.

Last Sunday night a Grammy was awarded to the show, LOVE which plays in the Mirage in Las Vegas, by Cirque Du Soleil. Last year I saw that show and as a part of the generation growing up with the Beatles I am telling you that all of you should find a way to witness this event. The music, the magic, the dancers, the unbelievable actors who put on this show all deliver one resounding message that John, Paul George and Ringo tried to deliver when they were touched by the gods and gave us their ten years of work…LOVE is all you need.

You are reading the words of a very blessed man. Because in my life the accumulated treasure I consider priceless is the love I have from my wife, my children, and my friends and family. Other people have more money and more stuff, and many writers are more famous, but none are richer than I am.

I wish I had an account number for mine! I enjoyed when you said “make them see YOU know what really matters in the world”. I believe that those of us who strive to make money, and are looking for the “next great deal” just might need to make sure we aren’t leaving a mess behind for our children to clean up!

Welcome

After 30+ years in business, I’ve decided that it’s time to share my hard knocks knowledge. Having worked in almost 200 bankruptcy cases and many other kinds of business failure situations, I have awarded myself a Ph.D. from what I refer to as the Herman School of Business. In this blog, you’ll read about starting a business, running a business, and, if the situation calls for it, selling a business; about being a business success and not a business failure. Welcome …
