How are you on a people mover?
When you travel through airports you can define people by how they handle the people movers. The worst are the ones who believe the moving conveyor is there to do the work of life for them. They center themselves on the moving belt, oblivious to their surroundings and let their minds drift off into outer space.
Do these people not grasp the concept of the people mover? Do they really not feel the presence of someone behind them? The world is full of people like this who think life should move them along as well…while they do absolutely nothing and ignore the reality that surrounds them.
Parents let kids play on people movers. This drives me nuts. The kids see how long they can “walk backwards” despite the fact that I am running to catch a plane before they shut the door. Or, the fact that others with baggage in tow need to get past them. The kids don’t make me as crazy as the parents who are raising humans who believe they are the center of the universe who aren’t aware of others.
Couples forget that people movers are designed to get you somewhere faster. They hold hands and stand dead still blocking the people mover for those single folks trying to pass. I hold hands with my wife all the time when we walk…why do couples on a people mover hold hands and stand still?
Do people not read the signs clearly posted: stand on the right, walk on the left? See, those of us who want to keep walking when we hit the conveyor belt can use the people mover and share it with standers…but the standers insist on standing in the middle, or side by side with a friend or spouse. You would think they must get some perverse pleasure out of this behavior but unfortunately they are so lost in space they don’t even know what they are doing.
Approaching the people mover I check out what is half way down the belt…if a stander is blocking the road I skip the mover and usually pass the stander as I walk next to the people mover. It gives me no real pleasure to “beat” that person…the smoke coming out of my ears is hot because the stander doesn’t “get it” when it comes to this technology. We can blame escalators and elevators. These standers have been trained to get in the elevator or on the escalator and be still. Let the equipment take you where you are going.
One last thing about the people mover standers…how come when I finally get to my gate, or stop at the food court, or pop in for a magazine at the newspaper outlet…the “stander” is some how in front of me?
