Holiday Gift Idea...

On Tuesday of this week I spent two and a half hours at a trade show near Washington for the Potomac Meeting Professionals International group. The purpose was to gain exposure as a Speaker candidate for the two hundred plus Meeting Professionals who will plan events in the coming months. I shared a booth with Vicki Hess, another professional speaker and the exhibits hall was the standard fare you see at all conventions.

While we were there to inform the attendees of our credentials and identify who might be important to our goals over the next year, “people watching” goes with the territory.

As a salesman for most of my life I am sure there have been ties that were too loud, jackets too flashy, and I know some of those cars I drove to appointments, like that great bullet-back Buick Riviera were meant to convey a message or gain attention. The idea of course is to focus attention on yourself so you can be noticed. Doing it with style or panache takes a certain skill and on Tuesday I met a real Pro, with real Class at the event.

Strolling down the aisle towards our booth was a woman small of stature and large on style. Her hat was terrific. It was a wonderful, colorful, stylish hat that caught your eye. I think my opening comment as she walked by was that she surely would win “Best Hat” at the event, and she understood it was a positive remark despite the fact that she was also probably the only woman wearing a hat at the show.

We shook hands and exchanged information about what we each did and how we might benefit from each others’ service.

Andrea Savitch has started her business, UNIQUE EVENTS during this last year and I think she has a winner. You can go to her website at www.uniqueventsplan.com or email her at andrea@uniqueventplan.com. Briefly, she will plan an event that you can share with a loved one…or plan an event for your entire organization…that will be a complete surprise as it unfolds whether it is for a few hours, a few days, or longer. She will interview you to determine your wants, needs and desires and using your budget will give you an event you will cherish and enjoy. The thought of turning over the minutiae to someone who will schedule the travel (car, boat, bus, or plane) and each activity (museums, movies, hikes, or ballgames) and have you at the right place at the right time for your meals (hot dogs to fine dining) until the event is over sounds like a great way to cover your Holiday Gift for someone you love.

The spontaneity of doing what you love, and being surprised at what comes next was the intriguing part I found fascinating. What a blast to go from a site-seeing tour of your own city, to a sandwich at a great Deli, then off to an afternoon movie, checking into your favorite type of hotel or bed and breakfast, and a wonderful dinner at some new restaurant. As the former owner of a Bed and Breakfast I saw hundreds of couples taking just two days out of their lives in the middle of a week away from work and enjoy these mini-vacations. Andrea adds spice to the idea because she plans the event and you get the joy of a surprise as your event unfolds.

I tip my hat (mine would be a baseball cap) to a Lady in a beautiful piece of millinery.

Welcome

After 30+ years in business, I’ve decided that it’s time to share my hard knocks knowledge. Having worked in almost 200 bankruptcy cases and many other kinds of business failure situations, I have awarded myself a Ph.D. from what I refer to as the Herman School of Business. In this blog, you’ll read about starting a business, running a business, and, if the situation calls for it, selling a business; about being a business success and not a business failure. Welcome …
