Business truth or consequences...
Who tells the truth to business owners? Who teaches the small business owner and the Mom & Pops who are risking their life savings and hocking their financial futures to chase what Donny Deutsch taunts them as “The Big Idea.”
I am Pro Small Business. I want to champion people to succeed with their whim or fantasy or dream to make money. But if they want to win someone needs to tell them the truth and not just sugarcoating and cheerleading.
If you have been reading this blog for awhile you already know this.
Now, in that I plan to approach the nation’s newspapers with my idea to write a weekly column, I am soliciting your help. They want upbeat, positive “feel good” stuff that educates readers without bringing them down. Editors want columns that give them a chance to be timely and alert the reader to current changes and conditions in the economy. Newspapers want cutting edge without controversy when it comes to filling out their pages.
But…in the real world of business I have lived and made a fortune in…bad stuff happens. Sometimes downright awful stuff happens. And if owners can’t get through the bad stuff they won’t ever get to the “gee whiz ain’t this wonderful stuff.”
So now I ask for your help. You are a reader and I want feedback. Good and bad. Which postings appealed to you the most? What kind of column would you enjoy the most? Is it “how to stuff” or is it “war story stuff” or do you like the fact that I throw in “herman philosophy stuff?”
I will be going back and taking 6 or 8 of the postings I have written and present them as a part of my “marketing folder” which will be sent to hundreds of Editors and syndicators, along with a copy of my book, “HERMANISMS” along with some resume material. The challenge is interesting to me. How can I tell the truth without also telling the business consequences…since most people fail I want a column that educates not just the winners, but helps keep some losers from going broke and leaving the game altogether.
I am anxious to hear what you have to say. Email me at Herman@Hermanisms.com or post a comment here…I don’t intend to publish them…but they sure will help me, so thanks in advance for your response. And while you are at it…what’s your idea for the name of my column?

Herman, I think you should include both, “how to stuff” and “war stories”. Why does the newspaper want “feel good stuff” when you turn on the TV and hear a majority of negative stories. Some people respond to stories others need specifics.
HERMAN SAYS: First of all, it's great to hear from you Larry. It seems that people want "puff" over reality...hence we have the problems we do. If people simply spoke more openly about the real issues they would be easier to solve.Written by Larry Martin on 6 May 2008
