Because I Said So...

I am not talking about that dreaded phrase from your mother who would issue a command and when you challenged it she would simply say… “Because I said so!”

Every person can survive this economic crash…because I said so.

Please re-read the previous sentence. I didn’t say every business can survive, I said every person can. There were countless examples of plane crashes shown to us in pilot training where they concentrated on two things when they went over the events. We would see films of airplanes smashing into the ground in a fiery ball of flames. We would see airplanes splashing into the water and breaking into pieces knowing no one inside could survive. And then they slowed the films down and showed you a tiny spot on the screen. A little dot that came more into focus as the dot fell to earth. It was the pilot who had bailed out! The pilot survived but the plane didn’t.

There is no doubt many businesses will fail. In good times 40% never achieve a profit…right now the number is off the chart. But do the owners have to crash with the business? Now, those pilots who bailed out didn’t always escape without broken bones, internal injuries, or losing a few teeth…BUT THEY SURVIVED and that means they could fly again.

The resilience of human beings is unmatched by any other living creature. The human spirit is the toughest thing in nature. And the human beings who are business owners who survive the worst crashes are often found to catapult that crash into a huge success with incredible hard work and the power of their imagination. Because they have “let go” of one thing inside of them. The fear that if their next venture crashes…they will not survive.

Face your situation honestly. Do you need to bail out because your business is going to crash. If you bail out now and survive to start another one you can become a huge success…BECAUSE I SAID SO.

Welcome

After 30+ years in business, I’ve decided that it’s time to share my hard knocks knowledge. Having worked in almost 200 bankruptcy cases and many other kinds of business failure situations, I have awarded myself a Ph.D. from what I refer to as the Herman School of Business. In this blog, you’ll read about starting a business, running a business, and, if the situation calls for it, selling a business; about being a business success and not a business failure. Welcome …
