Are You Where You Wanted To Be?

Yesterday I spoke to my five year old grandson, Tyler. He just “Graduated” from Pre-school on his way to Kindergarten. One part of the ceremony was to ask each student what they wanted to be when they grew up. Tyler thought for a minute, rolled his eyes, and said he couldn’t pick just one thing because there is so much he wants to do!

After I stopped laughing I stared at this wonderful kid and realized he is at the beginning as I get near the end. Now, I am not finished yet, and he still needs an education before he really gets started…but it did give me a moment of focus so I could reflect on my childhood. First of all I had never been near a school when I was five years old and I didn’t go to Kindergarten so Tyler is miles ahead of where I was. At five I have no idea what I was thinking. The earliest memory I have of wanting to be something was of playing baseball, or being a Priest, and for sure some day becoming the President of the United States.

So I didn’t make it on those three options. Being a Dad to my kids ended up beating any of those things. And the many business opportunities that I took advantage of, seeing the country, and working with so many other people adds up to a pretty good life. And since I hit 59 a few days ago…I guess I am just over half-way to the finish line. Ha Ha. The truth is we become what we want…if we are smart…because we should follow the passion we have and the opportunities of the moment and enjoy what happens.

Tyler will have unlimited options. His parents are wonderful, supportive people who will monitor his education…as his “Poppy” I will corrupt him as much as I can with too much candy, keep him up late watching baseball movies when he stays at my house…and probably teach him some poker. He will achieve his goal of doing many things, because his eyes are wide open and he already knows he can go in more than one direction for a full and happy life.

Welcome

After 30+ years in business, I’ve decided that it’s time to share my hard knocks knowledge. Having worked in almost 200 bankruptcy cases and many other kinds of business failure situations, I have awarded myself a Ph.D. from what I refer to as the Herman School of Business. In this blog, you’ll read about starting a business, running a business, and, if the situation calls for it, selling a business; about being a business success and not a business failure. Welcome …
