Herman School of Business
And the Winner is...not always you!
The Oscars just started and I watch as five people in each category sit anxiously wondering if the fate of the gods is with them and they will carry the statue home tonight. At least they have a shot at a win. What about the one’s not here? The ones who worked just as hard and put forth their best effort and didn’t make the list of nominations.
On Friday they published the list of nominations for the Axiom Business Book Awards.
You don’t do work just to win an award. But you hope you do win. You don’t always think you are the best (funny, but I almost always do think my work is the best), but you hope others think you are the best.
Let’s face it folks. There are hundreds or thousands of people doing something like what you are doing. Maybe tens of thousands are running a company or small business like yours. Did the one who made the most money work harder than you? Did they just get luckier than you?
This is a great time to give you my real, gut level reaction to not being recognized for the book…Hermanisms…because after all, I do believe this book can help every entrepreneur out there. Every small business owner. Every person who runs their household finances. Yes, I think it should be considered one the finalists as among the best business books of last year. But the Judges for the Axiom Awards don’t agree with me. Okay.
Well so what.
When something doesn’t happen it just means it didn’t happen. The reality of what happens every day is that most American’s toil in anonymity and without hubbub or awards. And so like the thousands of writers who didn’t get nominated I will just keep writing. If you love what you are doing, and you believe in your work, you will have your five seconds of sadness and then move on.
