America is left behind...

Long ago in the 1960’s when the Vietnam War was being waged many American’s wondered why? The government answer was to fight the spread of communism and the rumor was to protect the business interest of American companies in that part of the world. Today we are in the 6th year of a war in Iraq and while we are “fighting terrorists” according to the government the rumor is again about American business interests (Oil).

American business is under attack from falling sales and a crashing American economy. American’s have no more credit to lean on for unlimited buying. Bankers are no longer giving loans for 100% of the value of a house and a signature on a piece of paper. House prices went up when money flowed freely for mortgages and people became investors thinking prices would only go one way…UP. But as stock prices fall each time quarterly reports are issued one thing is pointed to as the cure for weak company sales…growth overseas. You see even the stock “talking heads” all fall into line and rave about which American companies will succeed in the future as a result of growth outside of this country.

In point of fact over the last thirty years American business owners abandoned manufacturing in this country. Every industry that made clothes, toys, electronics and millions of items Americans bought more of than every other country on the planet put together left this country for cheaper labor overseas. Bye-bye to the American working class because in order to sell more goods to the middle and upper classes the American blue collar worker was jettisoned for a few pennies per product. And since the middle and upper classes could get a three gallon jar of pickles at Wal-Mart for a couple of dollars they actually celebrated rather than do something about the loss of our manufacturing component.

Next came higher paying jobs that could be done through out-sourcing. What was touted as the replacement for factory jobs, technology jobs, didn’t go to retrained Americans…foreign countries can supply that cheaper too. And American business embraced it. Bye-bye Middle Income consumers. So, now we enter the final stage of American business turning its back on Americans. American business no longer cares about American consumers…they created so many consumers overseas by selling out American workers that other countries can now afford the goods sold by American Companies. Who now tout themselves as “Global Companies” so they can get their stock prices higher.

Now…shooting this truth stuff at you often makes me sound like a “Doomsdayer.”

Not so, my incredibly shrinking American friend. Embrace Globalism. Know that we are no longer the United States of America in economic terms. Years ago “WE ARE THE WORLD” was a song recorded by many artists to raise awareness of responsibility for the planet and not just your own country.

I do not advocate putting up big barriers and keeping the world out, nor do I say create tariffs to falsely make all prices equal. Every large American company you call for service or to order products offers multiple languages to conduct business. People born on foreign soil are now employed in every business venue in America.

Big Business has left the building, just like Elvis. Big Business has moved overseas.

Welcome

After 30+ years in business, I’ve decided that it’s time to share my hard knocks knowledge. Having worked in almost 200 bankruptcy cases and many other kinds of business failure situations, I have awarded myself a Ph.D. from what I refer to as the Herman School of Business. In this blog, you’ll read about starting a business, running a business, and, if the situation calls for it, selling a business; about being a business success and not a business failure. Welcome …
